A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Alverton Mines & Coke Works


Following is a partial list of the miners, coke workers, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Alverton Mines & Coke Works (The old Donnelly No. 1 & No. 2 and Mayfield Mine), Alverton, East Huntingdon Twp, Westmoreland Co., PA.   The miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of miners submitted by various people, etc.
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

(Injured.  Leg broken by mine cars running on him, in the Alverton No. 2 Mine, Feb. 8, 1900.
Kolessar, George
(Slavonian Miner, Pick Miner ca.1903, Alverton No. 1 Mine, Westmoreland Co., PA, Age 40, married 3 children.);
(Killed.  He was killed instantly by an explosion of dynamite, in the Alverton No. 1 Mine, March 5, 1903.);
(March 5, Alverton Mine No. 1, George Kolessar, miner, was killed instantly.  He was employed making a crosscut in a room rib.  He left his boarding house early in the morning taking with him three sticks of dynamite, which he carried in his coat pocket.  Upon ariving at his working place he informed the workman in the next place that he had a notion to fire a shot in the coal, and a few minutes later the dynamite was exploded, which mangled his body terribly.  The conditions indicate that he had one or all three of the sticks of dynamite in his hand when it exploded.)
