A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Yough No. 1 & No. 2 Mines


Following is a partial list of the miners, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Yough No. 1 Mine, Yough No. 2 Mine, Dravosburg, Allegheny Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous mines.

(Killed.  Fatally injured by a fall of slateat the face of a room while loading a mine car, in the Yough No. 2 Mine, Feb. 18, 1908.)

(Injured.  Leg broken by a chain machine, in the Yough No. 2 Mine, Sept. 18, 1906.)

(Italian Miner, Pick Miner ca.1903, Yough No. 2 Mine, Age 47, single.);
(Killed.  Instantly killed by a fall of slate, in the Yough No. 2 Mine, May 23, 1903.);
(On May 23, Matio Landra, miner, was instantly killed in Yough No. 2 Mine, by a fall of slate.  He was knocking coal at the time.  Subsequent examination of the place showed that the victim had been very careless in regards to posting slate, as the posts were set entirely too far apart and carelessly adjusted.)
Leigo, Aymonde
(Italian Miner Boy, Coal Loader ca.1907, Yough No. 2 Mine, Age 17, single.);
(Killed.  Killed instantly by a fall of slate at the face of a room, in the Yough No. 2 Mine, Aug. 14, 1907.  He and his partner had made an effort to get the slate down.  Liego was shoveling coal from the front of the slate when it fell.)

(American Miner, Rope Rider ca.1907, Yough No. 2 Mine, Age 44, single.);
(Injured.  Ankle broken by jumping from a trip of loaded mine cars that left the track.  Outside the Jough No. 2 Mine, Aug. 5, 1907.)

(American Miner Boy, Mule Driver ca.1907, Yough No. 2 Mine, Age 19, single.);
(Injured.  Arm broken between a mine car and an entry pillar, in the Yough No. 2 Mine, July 25, 1907.)
McGown, Joseph
(American Miner, Pick Miner ca.1903, Yough No. 2 Mine, Age 30, married, 1 child.);
(Killed.  Fatally injured by a fall of coal & Slate, in the Yough No. 2 Mine, Sept. 1, 1903.);
(On Sept. 1, Joseph McGown, miner, was fatally injured by a fall of coal and slate at face of room in Yough No. 2 Mine.  He had been warned of the dangerous condition of the coal and slate by James Penbutty, a machine runner, but failed to heed the warning.)

(Injured.  Leg broken by a rope coming off a sheave and striking his leg.  Outside the Yough No. 2 Mine, March 19, 1910.)

(Killed.  Fatally injured by a fall of slate, in the Yough No. 2 Mine, Sept. 5, 1905.);
(September 5, Govassia Paolo, loader, was fatally injured in Yough No. 2 Mine by a fall of slate, while knocking coal at the face of a room.  A post had been set under the slate but it was not properly adjusted.  I was informed by the fire-boss that Paolo was very careless about setting posts.)

(Killed.  Fatally injured by a fall of slate, in the Yough No. 2 Mine, Sept. 14, 1904.)

(Injured.  Leg amputated by a minemotor on the main haulage road, in the Yough No. 2 Mine, Oct. 18, 1909.)
Rittler, Christ
(German Miner, Pick Miner ca.1905, Yough No. 2 Mine, Age 39, married, 6 children.);
(Killed.  Killed instantly by a fall of slate, in the Yough No. 2 Mine, Nov. 4, 1905.);
(November 4, Christ Rittler, miner, was instantly killed in Yough No. 2 Mine by a fall of slate.  He was working in a pillar and at the time of the accident was knocking a post from beneath the slate when the later fell upon him.  The accident was unavoidable.)

(Injured.  Foot fractured and back and elbow injured by a fall of coal on pillar work, in the Yough No. 2 Mine, Dec. 14, 1917.)

(Killed.  Kiled instantly by a fall of roofat the face of a room, in the Yough No. 2 Mine, Feb. 4, 1908.)
Siapnick, Andy
(Austrian Miner, Pick Miner ca.1914, Yough No. 2 Mine, Age 36, married.);
(Injured. Collar bone fractured.  A mine car jumped the track on an entry and knocked out a mine post which struck him, in the Yough No. 2 Mine, March 3, 1914.)
Stenzel, Steven
(German Miner, Coal Loader ca.1905, Yough No. 2 Mine, Age 50, married, 4 children.);
(Killed.  Fatally injured by a fall of slate, in the Yough No. 2 Mine, Dec. 14, 1905.);
(December 14, Steven Stenzel, loader, was fatally injured by a fall of slate in the Yough No. 2 Mine.  He was knocking down coal near the gob side of his pillar.  The slate at this point was somewhat disturbed by slips, and required very careful attention.  Died December 23, 1905.)
