Antonovski, Mr.
(Hungarian Miner, Pick Miner ca.1892, Willow Grove Mine, Allegheny Co., PA,
married, 2 children.);
(Killed. A sad accident occurred at the McDonald depot last Sunday afternoon
by which a man named Antonovski, living at Willow Grove, was killed. He was
waiting at the depot with the body of a child of his who had died the day
before, intending to take it away on the train when he noticed an east bound
freight approaching at a high rate of speed, and fearing apparently that
the little coffin containing the remains projected too far over onto the
track, ran to pull it back. But he was not quick enough in getting away and
the train hit him, knocking him about twenty feet and injuring him so that
he died in a few moments. His wife and little girl standing by were terribly
affected at being thus doubly afflicted. Antonovski was a Hungarian and worked
in the Willow Grove mine. [from the "McDonald Record," July 23,
1892.].)

Subject: Re: Willow Grove Miners
I have chatted with my mother and these names are what she had. Robert HESS
who was born 1867 worked in these mines until 1920 when he left because of
coal damp in his lungs. He was married to Margaret Allen who died in 1904.
He had a twin brother George HESS who most likely worked the mines also.
George was married to a gal named Lila Isabel, maiden name unknown. They
had a brother Chalmer and a brother Willard whom married Eva, maiden name
unknown. Willard and Eva had four children: Norabell, who married a NEITZEL
and later married David BURGHY; Rose; David; and George. No more information
known of them. Ernie HESS is another brother of Robert, George, Chalmer,
& Willard. His wife's name unknown, but, they had eight children. One
of the eight was named Morgan. Also among this group is Russell Banfield
who married Louise, maiden name unknown. Orville HESS is George & Lila's
son. Walter Wallace was born to Margaret Allen before she married Robert
HESS. He must have been illegitimate. Then comes a Nora and a Harvey Johnson.
Mother did not know the exact dates they worked in the mines, but I hope
this will give you enough information to start on. Robert HESS came to Iowa
after his daughters came to Iowa and lived with his daughter and her husband;
Harley Roy ETZEL and Elizabeth Ann HESS (my grandparents). My mom is now
in her eighties and never knew her grandmother and only some of the people
in Ohio. Again I hope this helps you and in turn will help me.
