in the act of moving a mining machine, in the Walton No. 2 Mine, Oct. 28,
1907. The scraper had removed the front jack and was barring the machine
back when about a ton of coal fell over and caught him. A shot crack
from the last cut intersected with a clay vein that run at an angle across
the room and cut off all adhesion. He died two hours later.)

was yet afire he put it in his pocket, a few minutes after that he discovered
smoke issuing from his pocket, he then became excited and jumped from the
locomotive, but in doing so he slipped and fell in front of it, and one of
the driving wheels ran over him in such a manner as to cause death the same

knocking down coal, Sept. 5, 1907. He had fired a butt shot and in
going back he went under the slate when it fell and caught him. He
died ten days later.)
Withers, Alfred

(Killed. Alfred Withers, one of the best known residents of Floreffe,
employed as a miner in the Walton No. 2 Mine, was killed on Tuesday evening.
His dead body was found in the workings at about 9:30 o'clock. It would seem
that he had been pushing a car out of his room and it had run back on him,
rolling him and breaking his neck. Mr. Withers was about 48 years of age,
and was a highly respected citizen. He was a member of the Petersburg Methodist
Episcopal church and a Knight of Pythias. His wife and five children survive
him. The burial will be on Friday afternoon at Elizabeth cemetry. [Notice
