A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Superior No. 1 Mine


Following is a partial list of the miners, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Superior No. 1 Mine, Superior, Russellton, West Deer Twp., Allegheny Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous mines.

(Injured. Rib fractured.  Caught between mine car and a rib on an entry, in the Superior No. 1 Mine, March 8, 1916.)
Baron, Stanislaw "Stiny"
(Miner, ca.1920-1938, Superior Mine.);
(Stanislaw Baron also worked at the Russellton No. 1 Mine.)

(Belgian Miner Boy, Mule Driver ca.1916, Superior No. 1 Mine, Age 18, single.);
(Injured.  Foot fractured.  Run over by mine cars on an entry, in the Superior No. 1 Mine, May 13, 1916.)
Bell, James
(Italian Miner, Pick Miner ca.1917, Superior No. 1 Mine, Age 47, married.);
(Injured.  Four ribs on right side and one rib on left side fractured.  Struck by mine car that detached from a trip on the haulage road, which was being used as a traveling way as the manway was wet, in the Superior No. 1 Mine, Oct. 3, 1917.)

(Injured.  Toe crushed.  Caught by mine cars on entry, in the Superior No. 1 Mine, April 20, 1916.)
Boharch, Louis
(Austrian Miner, Machine Miner ca.1917, Superior No. 1 Mine, Age 33, married.);
(Injured.  Hand cut on back by machine pick while digging out machine, in the Superior No. 1 Mine, June 6, 1917.)

(Injured.  Body bruised by falling off mine shaft hoisting cage into the mine shaft, in the Superior No. 1 Mine, Jan. 4, 1916.)

(Slavonian Miner, Laborer ca.1910, Superior No. 1 Mine, Age 38, married, 8 children.);
(Killed.  Instantly killed by falling between two mine cars while attempting to set the brake.  He was unloading two cars of ashes over the dump and removed the block before he set the brake.  Outside the Superior No. 1 Mine, Sept. 7, 1910.)
