A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Russellton Mines


Following is a partial list of the miners, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Russellton No. 1 & No. 2 Mines, Russellton, West Deer Twp., Allegheny Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous mines.

(Miner, Russellton No. 2 Mine, Allegheny Co., PA, married, wife Mary Stanowski Adams.);
(Stanley Adams began working in the mines at age 15 with his father Bruno Adams.);
(b. 1913 - d. 2003.);
(In the 1940's, the mines offered the coal company houses to employees to purchase, and he bought a home on Bosse's Row, "houses originally built for the bosses." It was actually called Garden Street. He retired from the mine at about age 62.);

(Emigrated to the US from Zagorje, Slovenia, ca.1912.);
(John Luzar also worked at the Ocean No. 2 OCC Mine, at Herminie No. 2, Westmoreland Co., PA before moving to Russellton, PA in ca.1919.);
(He left the mines in Russelton during one of the coal miners strikes and moved to Brackenridge, Pa to go to work for Allegheny Steel Corp.  The only thing he ever said about the move to Brackenridge was that "He had lost too many friends in the mines and didn't want to die in that hole.")
