A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Risher Mine


Following is a partial list of the miners, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Risher Mine, near Dravosburg, Allegheny Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous mines.

(Injured.  Severely injured by a fall of roof, in the Risher Mine, July 13, 1905.)

(Killed.  Fatally injured by a fall of roof on the main parting.  He got off the motor trip and was walking along the empty track when the roof fell and caught him.  The foreman and others passed this point several times each day, but did not notice any danger, in the Risher Mine, April 5, 1907.)

(Killed.  Fatally injured by being caught between a mine car and an entry pillar, in the Risher Mine, Dec. 13, 1905.  Previous to the accident the deceased was standing in the breakthrough, and when the trip was passing, he attempted to put in the hitching, but in some manner failed, and was caught as stated.)

(Killed.  Killed instantly by a loaded mine car.  He was hauling a trip of mine cars to the parting and fell in front of the trip, in the Risher Mine, May 23, 1908.)

(Killed.  Killed instantly by a fall of a horseback while cleaning up the fall of his room, in the Risher Mine, July 17, 1905.  Subsequent examination of the place showed that the horseback had broken off parallel and flush with the face of the room.)

(Injured.  Fingers lacerated.  Caught between frame of machine and a rib at the face of the working place, in the Risher Mine, Dec. 22, 1916.)

(Killed.  Fatally injured by a fall of slate, in the Risher Mine, Nov. 10, 1905.  Thorpe, with Frederick Smith, was loading a mine car in room 89, left, 10th entry and the accident was caused by their neglecting to place a post under the slate.  He died of the injuries Nov. 12, 1905.)
