A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Plum Creek Mine


Following is a partial list of the miners, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Plum Creek Mine, Negley, Wilkinsburg, Plum Twp., Allegheny Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous mines.

(Killed.  Instantly killed by an electric motor running over him.  Outside the Plum Creek Mine, May 6, 1909.)

(Miner, Mining Boss ca.1892, Plum Creek Mine, Allegheny Co., PA, for New York & Cleveland Gas Coal Company.)
Clark, Robert J.
(American Miner, Mule Driver ca.1910, Plum Creek Mine, Allegheny Co., PA, Age 26, single.);
(Injured.  Hand crushed and had to be amputated.  Caught between a mine car and a rib while hauling on No. 4 switch.  He ran into a fall which threw the front of the mine car off track, in the Plum Creek Mine, March 30, 1910.)
Clark, William
(American Miner, Pick Miner ca.1910, Plum Creek Mine, Allegheny Co., PA, Age 49, married, 4 children.);
(Killed.  Fatally injured by a fall of slate at the face of a room on the second entry.  There was a bad slip in the slate, in the Plum Creek Mine, June 20, 1910.  He died July 11, 1910.)

(Killed.  Instantly killed by a fall of slate, in room pillar 23 on second No. 9 entry, in the Plum Creek Mine, Jan. 20, 1898.  He was working alone and it is supposed that he was knocking coal at the time, as he was found with a pick in his hand under the slate.)

(Killed.  Was seriously injured by a fall of slate, In the Plum Creek Mine, July 8, 1889.  He died two days afterwards;  upon investigation I found that there was not sufficient posts under the slate; why men take such chances I am unable to say.)
