A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Partridge Mine


Following is a partial list of the miners, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Partridge Mine, Imperial, Allegheny Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous mines.

(Injured. Back injured by a fall of slate;  he had been warned of his danger, in the Partridge Mine, Feb. 28, 1900.)
Borino, Mike
(Austrian Miner, Machine Helper ca.1901, Partridge Mine, Allegheny Co., PA, Age 28, married.);
(Injured.  One leg cut off and the other badly mangled by a mining machine, in the Partridge Mine, July 1, 1901.)

(Lithuanian Miner, Pick Miner ca.1916, Partridge Mine, Allegheny Co., PA, Age 20, single.);
(Injured. Hip fractured by a fall of roof at the face of a room, in the Partridge Mine, Dec. 21, 1916.)

(Injured.  Leg fractured above ankle and ankle dislocated by a fall of roof while making a fall, in the Partridge Mine, Dec. 8, 1917.)

(Killed.  Fatally injured by a fall of coal at the face of a room.  The place was traversed diagonally by a clay vein, which the tight shot of the previous cut had blown to, in the Partridge Mine, June 18, 1917.)

(Injured.  Face and arms burned by an explosion of powder caused by setting his powder can against an electric machine wire on a butt entry, in the Partridge Mine, Feb. 19, 1912.)

(Killed.  Killed by falling from the tipple outside of the mine, at the Partridge Mine, Jan. 16, 1903.)

(Killed.  Killed by a fall of slate in a room pillar.  He had fired a shot which knocked a prop out.  While attempting to reset the prop the slate fell upon him, in the Partridge Mine, July 30, 1904.)

(Killed.  Killed by a fall of slate in his room;  he failed to set props to protect himself, in the Partridge Mine, Aug. 3, 1900.)

(Injured.  Legs, arms and back bruised by a fall of slate which he pried off coal that he had shot down, in the Partridge Mine, Dec. 13, 1917.)

(Scotch Miner Boy, Coupler ca.1917, Partridge Mine, Allegheny Co., PA, Age 15, single.);
(Injured.  Two fingers smashed between the bumpers of empty mine cars when the trip parted and the mine cars ran back against the mine cars that he ws coupling.  Outside the Partridge Mine, Feb. 6, 1917.)

(October 23, John Kuis, coal loader, was serious injured by a fall of slate in the Partridge mine in No. 2 room, off No. 4 butt entry off No. 1 face entry.  Death resulted one hour later.)

(Killed.  Fatally injured.  While pushing a mine car of posts with the motor they collided with a motor standing ahead and he was caught between the mine cars, in the Partridge Mine, March 14, 1917.)
Pishock, Joseph
(American Miner Boy, Dropper on Tipple ca.1917, Partridge Mine, Allegheny Co., PA, Age 16, single.);
(Killed.  Fatally injured between mine cars.  The mine car that he was dropping, which was negligently run through the tipple, derailed and was struck by an empty that was following it, outside the partridge Mine, July 10, 1917.  He died in thirty minutes after.)

(Injured.  Hand burned by explosion of powder, in the Partridge Mine, Feb. 20, 1916.)
