A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Oak Hill Mines


Following is a partial list of the miners, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Oak Hill Mines, Turtle Creek, Allegheny Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

(Killed.  Fatally injured by being caught between a mine wagon and a coal pillar, in the Oak Hill No. 4 Mine, Sept. 9, 1898.  Death resulted some twenty four hours afterwards.  The accident happened near the entrance to No.4 Butt entry where the boy was engaged in trapping a door.)

(Killed.  Fatally injured.  He and the pumper were in a mine car going into the mine to repair a pump.  The mine car was equipped with a brake, but when they started from outside they lost control and the mine car was traveling so fast that they could not get out.  Down the slope about 2,800 feet from the mouth the mine car turned over, and they were thrown out, in the Oak Hill No. 3 Mine, June 21, 1910.)

(Killed.  Instantly killed by being crushed between a mine car and a rib, in the Oak Hill No. 5 Mine, July 18, 1903.  The night coal had been left on a parting 90 feet inside the pit mouth where an entry turns to the left.  The day drivers and some of the miners were pushing the wagons to give them a start, and in so doing they had a chain between some of them so that the jerk would assist in giving them a start.  The victim was pushing on a wagon on the inside of a curve, when a sudden jerk of the chain pulled the wagon that the victim was pushing off the track, and crushed his head between car and rib.  He had been warned to get away from that side of the car.)
