A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Oakdale Mine


Following is a partial list of the miners, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Oakdale Mine, Oakdale, Carnegie, Allegheny Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous mines.

(Injured.  Leg broken by a fall of roof coal at the face of a room, in the Oakdale Mine, Nov. 25, 1916.)

(Killed.  Fatally injured by a fall of slate at the face of entry stumps.  He was loading a mine car with coal when a piece of slate fell and knocking out a post that was set under the draw slate, allowing the slate to fall, in the Oakdale Mine, April 24, 1917.)

(November 22, Anthony Makuc, coal loader, was instantly killed by a fall of slate in No. 8 entry in the Oakdale Mine.  He neglected to put a post under the slate.)

(Injured.  Foot cut and bruised. Caught by  a machine bit while setting the front jack against the coal face, while the machine was running, in the Oakdale Mine, July 7, 1917.)

(Slavonian Miner, Coal Loader ca.1912, Oakdale Mine, Allegheny Co., PA, Age 40, married.);
(Injured.  Leg and rib broken by a fall of slate at the face of a room, in the Oakdale Mine, March 9, 1912.)

Wronski, Steve
(Polish Miner, Machine Miner ca.1917, Oakdale Mine, Allegheny Co., PA, Age 32, married, 5 children.);
(Killed.  Internally injured.  He and his partner prepared a shot on the side of the entry stump, which was only 8 feet thick and had been cut with the machine 5 feet deep.  The victim went into the parallel entry and sat in front of the shot after his partner had placed a squib in the hole and warned him that he was going to fire.  The shot blew through the pillar and the flying coal struck the victim, in the Oakdale Mine, May 15, 1917.  He died 6 hours later.)
