A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Natrona No. 1 & No. 2 Mines


Following is a partial list of the miners, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Natrona No. 1 & No. 2 Mines, Natrona, Allegheny Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous mines.

(Injured. Both legs broken by being run over by an empty trip of mine cars, in the Natrona No. 1 Mine, May 23, 1903.)

(Injured.  Leg fractured by a fall of coal.  He fired a shot at the face of the workings and started to load the coal without examining the roof, in the Natrona No. 1 Mine, March 2, 1910.)

(Injured.  Compound fracture of the leg between knee and ankle.  He neglected to throw a switch and the mine cars ran in on him, in the Natrona No. 1 Mine, Aug. 10, 1910.)

(Killed.  Instantly killed by electricity.  While laying machine cable it broke in his hands.  He was shocked and fell on the steel rail and the cable across him, in the Natrona No. 1 Mine, Aug. 24, 1909.)

(American Miner, Machine Runner ca.1916, Natrona No. 1 Mine, Allegheny Co., PA, Age 28, married.);
(Injured.  Leg fractured.  Knocked down by a mining machine at the face, in the Natrona No. 1 Mine, July 11, 1916.) 
Spiker, Charles
(American Miner, Coal Loader ca.1905, Natrona No. 1 Mine, Allegheny Co., PA, Age 22, single.);
(Killed.  Fatally injured by mine car.  He was walking beside a trip of loaded mine cars, when a linch pin caught his trousers and dragged him along the tracks.  In attempting to get loose his other leg was caught between the two wheels of the mine car, and he was dragged along side of the mine car for quite a distance before the trip was stopped, causing a compound fracture of the ankle, in the Natrona No. 1 Mine, Sept. 1, 1905.  Gangrene set in and he died Sept. 13, 1905.)

Walsh, Clair
(American Miner Boy, Door Boy ca.1907, Natrona No. 1 Mine, Allegheny Co., PA, Age 14, single.);
(Injured.  Leg broken by being caught between a door and the mine rail near the side track on the haulage road.  He was too late in opening the door and the motor trip struck it and knocked him down, in the Natrona No. 1 Mine, Sept. 18, 1907.)
