Washlaski, Historian: newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, county histories, township histories, Pennsylvania Geological Survey reports, topographical maps, personnal accounts of coal miners, etc., etc.]

Your help is needed to preserve our coal mining heritage.
Please donate any mine records, mine maps or copies of them, pictures of the mines, pictures of miners, stories about the miners, mine memorabilia, books on mining, or tax deductable monetary donations to:

Springdale Mine
(Logans Ferry Mine)
(ca.1920-  ?  ), located on a branch line of the Allegheny Valley Branch of the Pennsylvania Railroad, Logans Ferry, Plum Twp.,  Allegheny Co., PA
[Supplied coal to the Colfax Power Plant of Duquesne Light Company in Springdale, via. a tunnel and rail line under the Allegheny River to an unloader tipple at the Colfax Power Plant in Springdale.]
[The Logans Ferry Mine Tunnel consists of a pair of abandoned coal mine tunnels under the Allegheny River between Plum, Pennsylvania and Springdale, Pennsylvania. In 1919, West Penn Power acquired the land to built a power facility in Springdale, but did not have an adequate coal source. As a result, they leased coal-rich land on the opposite shore of the river. To simplify transport issues, the decision was made to built the mine tunnel, which opened in 1921. By the 1940s, the mine's resources started to be depleted and West Penn, which had constructed the neighborhood of Logan Heights (which today looks unlike most of the 1960s-or-later suburban stock that dominates Plum), transformed from being a company town to a community of homeowners. In 1954, the mine transferred most of its operations 4 miles (6.4 km) west to Upper Burrell Township, Pennsylvania (the former mine site remains a somewhat rural bluff in the midst of suburbia), but continued to use the tunnel. However, in 1968, the mine was closed permanently, and the tunnels are presumed to be currently flooded.]

Sygan, South Fayette Twp., Allegheny Co., PA
[Sygan. There are 39 Slovene families and 28 single men. That is to say 67 men without wives and children, As M. L. Glazer reported. The families Verdinek and Miklavcic came here in 1903, but most of them came in 1905. Many came from Carniola (Kranjska), Styria (Stajerska) and from the region of the Valley of Sales (Saleska Dolina). They work in the coal mines. There are two stores here which do not have too much business since the community is a small one, but of the original 27 company houses, the Slovene families have purchases 17 of them and 11 families have built their own homes.
The religious situation can be described as mediocre. The Slovenes worship either in the Slovene church in Bridgeville or in the parish church in Rosevale. In 1909 the Yugoslav Socialistic Club was founded together with a reading room, which was moved from Burdine in 1906. In 1904 the SNPJ Lodge #6 with 18 members was founded. Now there are 115 members.
The reporter added that the community is a small one, but full of life and the workers are members of the United Mine Workers of America and are interested in workers' rights. They have built a Slovene home under the guidance of Julius Lesjak. They purchased the building material for about $3,000 and the land, of course, but all the work was performed on a voluntary basis. The value of the work is estimated at about $1,000. {from Rev. J.M. Trunk text published originally in 1912 Part 8, History of Slovene Communities.}.]
