Allegheny County Pennsylvania - Coal Mine Index
INDEX  K
[This listing of coal mines and coal companies has been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, county histories, township histories, Pennsylvania Geological Survey reports, topographical maps, personnal accounts of coal miners, etc., etc.]
Very few coal company employee records exist today.  Most Coal Company employee records have been lost or destroyed after the mines were closed. If you have mine records or know of the location of coal company employee records please let us know.

Your help is needed to preserve our coal mining heritage.
Please donate any mine records, mine maps or copies of them, pictures of the mines, pictures of miners, stories about the miners, mine memorabilia, books on mining, or tax deductable monetary donations to:

Keelings Mine (ca.1878-  ?  ), located near the Monongahela River, Allegheny Co., PA
[The mines I was most interested in, on the Carrick (Pittsburgh) side of Wagner street is fairly bizarre. It seem that the Keeling Mine of the Birmingham Coal Company exited the coal seam on what is one side of Wagner, crossed the ravine on a 200 yard trestle, the re-entered another section of the mine, under what is now the Carrick section of Pittsburgh. This explains the strange, very short "railroad" on the early map of the Pittsburgh area.
