A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Idlewood Mine


Following is a partial list of the miners, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Idlewood Mine, Idlewood, Allegheny Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous mines.

(They were the first family to move into the 'Red Row' coal company houses , Idlewood, PA, when they were built, at 23 Jackson Rd., Idlewood, PA. They had moved to Idlewood from Irwin, where he worked until they closed down.);
(Paul Barth left the mines for a job with the Pittsburgh Water Heater Co, and the family and Ed Quinlan,  a boarder, moved to Chartiers St in Crafton,PA.);

(Injured.  On a day in February several years after the mine was in operation, Ed tried to stop a runaway train of cars, which was heading toward the Orphanage power house. While attempting to stop the cars with a sprag, he got caught under the mine cars, and his leg was amputated, at the Idlewood Mine.);
(Ed Quinlan was a boarder of Paul Barth, at 23 Jackson Rd., Idlewood, PA, he moved to Crafton, PA with the Barth family when they moved.);(Ed Quinlan died ca.1937 or 1938.)

(Killed.  Killed by a fall of slate in a room.  Was working under a large mass of slate without props being set for protection, in the Idlewood Mine, July 21, 1904.)

(Injured.  Four fingers of the left hand cut off while coupling mine cars.  Outside the Idlewood Mine, Aug. 1, 1906.)
Weyle, Bernard
(German Miner, Boiler Fireman ca.1917, he fired the boilers, Idlewood Mine, Allegheny Co., PA, Age 63, married.);
(Injured. Shoulder fractured.  He had cleaned out the boiler and put the manhead on.  When he commenced raising steam he found the steam leaking at th emanhead.  He started to take the manhead off again while there was steam in the boiler, which caused the steam to leak with greater force, and in trying to avoid the ateam he fell off the boiler.  Outside the idlewood Mine, Aug. 19, 1917.)
