A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Harwick Mine


Following is a partial list of the miners, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Harwick Mine, Harwick, Springdale Twp., Allegheny Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

(Killed.  Instantly killed by falling from an ascending hoisting cage into the shaft, in the Harwick Shaft Mine, Nov. 4, 1903.  He had been discharged at the shaft bottom for crossing under the cage to the opposite side of the shaft.  The mine foreman saw him do so and immediately discharged him and told the cager to give him a cage to the top, thinking that the safe place for a man who could not obey the mine rules.  He lost vhis balance, or something happened that we do not hnow of, for when the cage was up 70 feet he dropped back down the shaft.  Up about 70 feet in the shaft we found a part of his lamp on the shaft timbers, where he was crushed between shaft timbers and the cage.  The verdict of the jury was he came to his death accidentally by having lost his balance and fallen, being crushed to death by the elevator.)
