A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Harrison Mine (Beadling Mine)


Following is a partial list of the miners, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Harrisonn Mine, Beadling, Borland, Allegheny Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous mines.

Aston, Thomas
(American Miner, Company Man ca.1903, Harrison Mine, Allegheny Co., PA, Age 20, single.);
(Injured.  Hand injured by being caught between mine motor and mine cars in the mine, Jan. 13, 1903.)

Bakow, John
(Russian Miner Boy, Machine Miner ca.1916, Harrison Mine, Allegheny Co., PA, Age 17, single.);
(Killed.  Leg broken by a fall of slate at the face of the working place while tamping a shot hole. March 10, 1916.  He died three days later from pneumonia, caused by exposure in taking himn to the hospital.)
Bere, Angelo
(Italian Miner, Trimmer ca.1905, Harrison Mine, Allegheny Co., PA, Age 46, married, 1 child.);
(Killed.  Fatally injured by railroad cars.  Ouitside the harison Mine, Nov. 13, 1905.);
(November 13, Angelo Bere was seriously injured in the Harrison mine.  He was crushed between the slack coal on top of the railroad car and the cross timber of the tipple house.  Died November 15.)

(Injured.  Collar bone and rib broken by being caught between a railroad car and an upright post under the tipple.  Outside the Harrison Mine, Oct. 10, 1906.)

(Polish Miner, Machine Miner ca.1917, Harrison Mine, Allegheny Co., PA, Age 52, married.);
(Injured.  Compound fracture of ankle by a fall of slate at the face of the working place, in the Harrison Mine, Nov. 16, 1917.)

(Injured.  Bone in back broken by a fall of slate, in the Harrison Mine, Aug. 28, 1905.)

(Polish Miner Boy, Scraper ca.1905, Harrison Mine, Allegheny Co., PA, Age 19, single.);
(Killed.  Fatally injured by a mining machine.  His leg was caught and ground to pieces, in the Harrison Mine, July 11, 1905.);
(July 11, John Parelli, was seriously injured in No. 12 room off No. 4 butt entry in the Harrison Mine.   The mining machine was backing out from under the cut of coal, when the victim's leg was caught by the chain and ground to pieces between the ankle and knee.  He was taken to the hospital and died a few hours later.)

(Injured.  Leg broken by a fall of a horseback roof at the face of the working place, in the Harrison Mine, Nov. 3, 1917.)

(Killed.  Fatally injured by being run over by mine cars, in the Harrison Mine, March 4, 1905.);
(March 4, James C. Smith, was killed in the Harrison mine.  In attempting to step on the front end of a trip of loaded mine cars, he slipped and fell under them.  He died three hours later.)
