(At Fair Haven Mine, May 23, Nicholas Walker, loader, was instantly killed
by a fall of slate. It seems from the appearance of the room, that
he was knocking coal at the time of the accident. The slate fell out
near the road head. It was cut off on the right by a slip, and run
out on the left, leaving no support except that of resting on the face of
the coal. I am informed that the fire boss had warned the victim in
regard to the danger, previous to the accident.)
