A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Fair Haven Mine (Ormsby Mine)


Following is a partial list of the miners, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Fair Haven Mine (formerly called Ormsby Mine), Fair Haven, Baldwin Twp., Allegheny Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous mines.

(Injured.  Back burned by coming in contact with an electric wire, in the Fair Haven Mine, Jan. 25, 1905.)

(Injured.  Hand cut off by a fall of slate from a clay vein at the face of the working place, in the Fair Haven Mine, Jan. 4, 1916.)

(Russian Miner, Coal Loader ca.1905, Fair Haven Mine, Allegheny Co., PA, Age 35, single.);
(Killed.  Killed instantly by a fall of slate, in the Fair Haven Mine, May 16, 1905.);
(May 16, Mike Kaliah, loader, was instantly killed in the Fair Haven mine by a fall of slate.  It is not definitely known what the deceased was doing, but it is suposed he was preparing a place to set a post beneath the slate that fell upon him.)

(Killed.  Killed by a fall of roof in a room pillar;  he was taking props out and removed the wrong props, and then went under the unsupported roof to remove the props, which should have been taken out first, in the Fair Haven Mine, Nov. 20, 1901.)

(Killed. Instantly killed by a fall of slate, in the Fair Haven Mine, Dec. 30, 1903.);
(On Dec. 30, James E. Lewis, a boy, was instantly killed by a fall of slate in the Fair Haven Mine, while he and his father were engaged in loading coal.  James Lewis, his father, had made an examination of the slate a few minutes before the accident and saw no danger.)

Walker, Nicholas
(French Miner, Machine Loader ca.1903, Fair Haven Mine, Allegheny Co., PA, Age 54, married.);
(Killed.  Instantly killed by a fall of slate, in the Fair Haven Mine, May 23, 1903.);
(At Fair Haven Mine, May 23, Nicholas Walker, loader, was instantly killed by a fall of slate.  It seems from the appearance of the room, that he was knocking coal at the time of the accident.  The slate fell out near the road head.  It was cut off on the right by a slip, and run out on the left, leaving no support except that of resting on the face of the coal.  I am informed that the fire boss had warned the victim in regard to the danger, previous to the accident.)
