A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Essen Mines


Following is a partial list of the miners, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Essen Mines, Borland, Allegheny Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

(Killed.  He was found burried under a fall of slate at the face of a room.  The slate was very hard and he had fired two shots in order to bring it down, in the Essen No. 2 Mine, July 23, 1910.  It is not known how he came to be under the slate.)

(Injured.  Foot crushed.  Run over by a mine car on the main side track, in the Essen No. 3 Mine, Nov. 8, 1916.)
Tumelli, Rudolf
(American Miner, Mule Driver ca.1917, Essen No. 3 Mine, Allegheny Co., PA, Age 21, single.);
(Injured.  Foot injured.  Caught between a mine car and the mine bottom. He was pulling a loaded mine car out of 58 right butt entry and was getting on the front end of the mine car when it left the track, in the Essen No. 3 Mine, March 30, 1917.)
