A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Bunola Mine


Following is a partial list of the miners, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Bunola Mine, Bunola, Forward Twp., Allegheny Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous mines.

(Killed.  Instantly killed by a fall of slate, in the Bunola Mine, Nov. 17, 1903.);
(On November 17, Ladish P. Rimkievicz, loader, employed at Bunola Mine, was instantly killed by a fall of slate while knocking coal.  The slate falling out between the post and rib.  This accident was caused by negligence on the part of the victim, as the space between the post and rib was ten feet.)

(Injured.  Two toes slightly injured by a fall of slate and coal at the face of a room, in the Bunola Mine, Jan. 5, 1914.)
Rutoskey, Joseph
(Polish Miner, Coal Loader ca.1900, Bunola Mine, Allegheny Co., PA, Age 25, single.);
(Killed.  Instantly killed by a fall of slate, in the Bunola Mine, Dec. 3, 1900.  He was loading a mine car at the time of the accident.  The partner of the deceased said they sounded the slate a few minutes before it fell and considered it safe.)

(Prosecuted for Violation of Mining Laws:  November 26, 1913,  Lucas Stufuly, loader, Bunola Mine, Monongahela River Consolidated Coal & Coke Company.  Charge:  Violation of Rule 2, General Rules.  He was given a hearing before an alderman and was held for court.  The grand jury ignored the case, the county paying the cost.)

(Killed.  Killed instantly by falling down the mine shaft 76 feet in depth.  They were lowering timber into the shaft and a piece of timber in swinging struck him and made him lose his balance, in the Bunola Mine, Sept. 11, 1910.)
