A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Bertha Mine


Following is a partial list of the miners, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Bertha Mine, Bruceton / Epton, Allegheny Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous mines.

(Killed.  Fatally injured by a fall of slate, in the Bertha Mine, Oct. 28, 1901.)

(Killed Instantly killed by a fall of slate, in the Bertha Mine, April 3, 1905.);
(April 3, John Barribus, Machine Loader, Was instantly killed in the Bertha mine by a fall of slate. A post had been set under the slate but the falling coal from a shot had knocked it out, and he went beneath the slate to load coal without resetting the prop.)

(Injured.  Two fingers smashed by a mining machine, in the Bertha Mine, Aug. 5, 1903.)
Jones, Allen
(American Miner, Machine Loader ca.1903, Bertha Mine, Allegheny Co., PA, Age 33, married, 2 children.);
(Killed.  Injured fatally by a fall of a horse-back, in the Bertha Mine, Oct. 26, 1903.);
(Allen Jones, runner, was fatally injured by a fall of a horse-back at the face of a room in the Bertha Mine, Oct. 26.  Death resulted one-hour later.  The deceased and his partner, George Calaway, at the time of the accident, were moving a mining machine in order to make another run.  They had examined the roof a short time before the accident occurred and considered it safe.)

(Killed.  Instantly killed by a fall of slate, in the Bertha Mine, Oct. 6, 1903.);
(Michael Pechanna, loader, was instantly killed October 6, by a fall of slate while knocking coal in day-light entry, Bertha Mine.  An examination of the slate showed that it was cut by a slip running nearly parallel to the face, which was not perceptible until after the slate had fallen.)

(Julius Tackacs, loader, while at work in his room at Bertha Mine, May 25, was fatally injured by a fall of slate while knocking coal. Upon examination I found that the salte was fairly well posted, and that the deceased had been caught by a piece of slate which had fallen out between the post and face.)
