From the 1889, Pennsylvania Report of the Inspectors of Mines

Alice Mine: The average amount of air in circulation per minute was 31,927 cubic feet. During the summer months this quantity was not sufficient. A large quantity of black-damo (carbonie acid gas) was given off in the mine and the furnace fird would not burn. I requested the superintendent to replace the furnace with a fan, which was done. An air shaft was sunk 44 feet deep; size 10 feet X 10 feet; timbered with 8" X 10" timber and lined with 2 inch plank. The fan is of the Guibal pattern, 20 feet in diameter and 6 foot face; size of engine, 16" X 30". The engine is attached direct to the fan shaft. A test was made of the fan and at 40 revolutions it produced 63,840 cubic feet, and at 80 revolutions 122,240 cubic feet per minute. There will be no further trouble about air in this mine. The drainage is fair. Mining Boss, James Eaton.
