A Memorial Honor Roll for the Coal Miners that Worked the
Acme Mine & Coke Works


Following is a partial listing of the miners, coke workers, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Acme Mine, Acme Mines, East Huntingdon Twp, Westmoreland Co., PA.    The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous mines.

(Injured.  Body injured by fall of roof coal, in the Acme Mine, Dec.8, 1906.)

(Killed.  Killed in the Acme Mine, August 14, 1903.);
(Fatally injured in the cme Mine, August 14, 1903.  He was drawing a rib in company with John Vasko.  The first fall in the place occurred during the night, when only the lower roof had fallen. The mine foreman had visited the place and instructed them to place a row of posts at the end of the rib, cut across again a few feet from the corner, and mine back toward the fall.  They placed the posts but Michael Depts went back inside of the posts to mine a slab up from the corner, when a portion of roof fell and caught him, inflicting injuries from which he died.)

(Injured.  Body bruised and back lacerated by fall of coal and slate in the Acme Mine, Sept. 1, 1902.)
Kominsky, Frank
(Polish Miner, Pick Miner ca.1905, Acme Mine, Westmoreland Co., PA, Age 38, married, 6 children.);
(Killed.  Killed instantly by fall of roof.  He was working on a pillar when the roof  fell on him.  The cut-through was only 14 feet wide and the rib 20 feet thick. In the cut-through there was a middle row of posts, leaving a space of only 7 feet, where the fall occurred, in the Acme Mine, Oct. 20, 1905.)
Kovack, John
(Slavonian Miner, Pick Miner  ca.1903, Acme Mine, Westmoreland Co., PA, Age 31, married, 4 children.);
(Killed.  Killed instantly, May 14, 1903 by falling roof, in the Acme Mine.  He was employed drawing a rib in company with Frank Katera, who was present at the time. They had finished the rib with the exception of making the last fall of roof, and Kovack was engaged cutting out the coal stump for that prupose. It began to work heavily and he retreated to the room neck where he stopped to listen, when the roof  broke very suddenly, and a slip in the slate a few feet from the corner of the stump permitted the lower roof to tail out to that point and caught him.)

(Fatally injured by fall of slate, in the Acme Mine, July 16, 1905.  He died July 28, 1906.  He was bringing out a loaded mine wagon on front of which he was riding.  A piece of slate fell from the roof crushing him down on the mine wagon.)

(Prosecuted for Violations of the Mining Laws:  June, 1910. Information was made against Joseph Sibelle, miner, employed at the Acme Mine of the W.J. Rainey Company, charged with taking tobacco and matches into the mine.  He is a fugitive from justice.)
Steffel, Joseph
(Bohemian Miner Boy, Mule Driver ca.1905, Acme Mine, Westmoreland Co., PA, Age 18, single.);
(Killed.  Killed instantly by mine cars, in the Acme Mine, Aug. 25, 1905.  The mine wagon jumped the track and caught him against the rib. The width of the entry at point where accident occurred is 10 feet 3 inches and distance from rail to rib on side where he was crushed is 4 feet 11 inches.)
